If you have been at your Internet business for a while now, then you are most likely familiar with the importance of quality content. But, if you are just starting out, you might not have that information available to you. You can read numerous material from me, as well as others on its importance.
Or, you can take my word for it and get off to a great start by learning how to achieve quality content from the beginning. So let’s focus on how to obtain the quality content that will get your website off to a great start.
There is no need to waste a lot of your time in spinning articles, or stuffing inadequate material with keywords and phrases. The main reason is that Google is quickly shutting the door on that type of writing, and will not rank those articles. They are looking for quality articles that actually serve a purpose to the reader, not the computer spiders.
However, the thing you need to do when starting out is to make sure you are working in a professional manner. When working from home, it’s so tempting to sit on the couch with your feet up. That’s not a good idea though. It will show in your work, if you are not taking your career seriously.
Professionalism at Home
Working from home certainly has its perks. But, it also has its share of drawbacks…if we let it. The number one thing you need to do when starting your career from home, is to make it official with a professional setup.
Find a spot in the house to call your office. Even if it’s a cornered off area in the open, get a glass corner computer desk to call your own. The reason I say glass corner, is because it will fit nicely in the room and not look cumbersome and out of place, because of the transparency of the glass.
Once you have a professional work space, then you can begin on your wonderful new adventure.
Now, on to quality content…
Readers will Determine Quality
Many people starting out make the mistake of thinking that because their website looks great to them, it must to others. However, that’s not the case. Don’t make the same mistake, not because it’s not correctable, but because it’s a waste of time to have to correct it.
From the beginning, make sure you play to your readers. Know who you want to attract, and write material that they are seeking. Grab their attention from the start with information that is helpful, not just fluff.
An example would be review sites. Some website owners of these sites have made the mistake of making all the products sound wonderful. But, that is merely a sales pitch that they can get from the manufacturer’s site. What a reader is looking for is honesty, and a realistic review.
If you produce valuable information, such as an honest review, readers will return.
Relate to Your Readers
If you have some favorite print publications, take note as to their writing styles. Chance are, they are talking to the readers, rather than simply printing out a bunch of words. If they are telling a story, it’s because it works.
By telling a story, it makes it more personable and the reader can relate. This will hold their interest longer, and keep them coming back for more. Pretend you are face to face with the readers, relating the story you wish to tell.
Most readers are looking for a warm and inviting piece to read, as well as informative.
Not a Writer?
Not a problem. There are a couple solutions for that. When I first thought of affiliate marketing, I was in carpentry. Writing was the furthest from my mind, until I realized I needed written material.
I have always loved to tell a story verbally, which is why I now love podcasts. Knowing that I excelled in orating, but not the written word, I decided to outsource. I knew what I wanted to say, but felt it’s best to have someone else actually pen my words for me.
What I learned through one of the professionals I hired was that she often spends far more time researching, than she does writing. Even if she knows the topic well. This is probably why I struggled with it, because I was just winging it from head to paper. I have a lot of information to share, but I soon realized that research helps to enhance all topics.
Easy Steps to Quality Content
No matter what your topic is, or your website is about, the following steps work well for developing quality material.
As I mentioned above, research is vital to creating a high quality piece of writing. It can back up your claims, add more substance to what you already have, and light a fire under you to get it done.
Next, you will want to organize all the information you get, and place it in an outline, preferably in the order you wish to tell your story. This will lead to a smoother read for your guest, and a high quality piece to be picked up by Google.
Use real information when possible. Your piece will gain credibility when you can back up your information with real examples, quotes, and links by real people.
Formatting is also important in maintaining a reader’s interest. If you are writing long and drawn out paragraphs, people tend to ‘wander’. To avoid that, break the paragraphs down into smaller and more readable parts. Also use subheadings and bullet points to break it up for the reader. If they can see something interesting coming ahead, it will keep them engaged.
Finally, when you are finished, step back for a moment, then come back to read it. Make sure you are tackling all the needs your readers might have, as well as catching any errors.
If you are still finding this to be a challenge, then you can always outsource the writing to someone else. But, at least you have some good basics on what to expect from them.
Know what is out in Tech World
This last area I want to talk about is technology, and how it can make your job easier. When first starting out, it might be tempting to get everything there is that claims to make your life better. But, step back and take a look at what is available first. Then, check reviews and ask around.
Items that might be able to help are:
- Smart Phone
- Video Conferencing Tools
- Various Software
Just take a look at them, and what they can do for you. For example, video conferencing how it works and what it can do for you is all information you can garner through review sites.
I am interested in hearing what you have to say about all of this. Please leave comments or questions that you might have in the box below.
