Last week I spoke at Affiliate Summit West 2012 in Las Vegas. While my session was based on how to fix your website and aimed at newbies I did have a benefit that I didn’t think about. Before my session, I put out a leaflet which I lovingly called homework for the people in attendance to take home. This leaflet not only caused me to have more affiliates sign-up for affiliate programs it also caused us to have affiliates that never heard of us before sign-up.
At the time I didn’t think about it, but giving the people in the presentation homework with my URL on it was actually a great idea at driving affiliate sign-ups to our programs. If the my presentation was over and I went into the bloggers lounge to catch up on some work I noticed a few affiliate applications start to come in. What was strange is that the affiliates were joining every single program that we run. Normally this happens, but it is one or two affiliates to join every program. This was different, I had 10 affiliates join all 10 of our programs.
Flood Of Affiliate Sign-ups
While I thought this was strange it wasn’t until the next day that I noticed the flood of affiliate sign-ups. It seemed that no matter where I went in the show hall people came up to me telling me that they joined a few of our affiliate programs. It was nice added benefit that I didn’t think about at the time. It has been a few days since I spoke at Affiliate Summit and I would guess that we had over 250 applications to all programs as a result of speaking. I have been telling everybody that it was a one-time deal for me to speak publicly at Affiliate Summit but since the benefit is so great I may have to come out of retirement.
I had five super affiliates come up to me and tell me that they were joining my programs because I had a piece of paper that they could take home with them. While my hand out didn’t have a list of the affiliate programs I run it did have my URL. During my speech I do a lot of talking about trust and other factors that make websites perform better in the search engines. Some affiliates gravitated towards me and a level of trust was built between us without even trying to build a trust. That is something that you won’t get by doing cold calls.
So the lesson learned here is if you’re going to publicly speak at a conference and you are running affiliate programs be sure to put your URL on your hand out. Thinking about it further if you are a merchant and you want to get more affiliates to sign up for your programs you can hand out some sheets when you speak it your local Chamber of Commerce or anywhere that you are doing a public speaking engagement.
